Transforming Manufacturing Packaging with World-Class Operations Management
In today’s competitive business landscape, implementing effective operations management practices is essential for companies working in the packaging industry. With the rapid growth of globalization and technological advancements, achieving world-class operations management (WCOM) can not only streamline processes but also differentiate businesses from their competitors.
Understanding World-Class Operations Management
World-class operations management refers to the implementation of best-in-class practices that enhance operational efficiency, productivity, teamwork, and customer satisfaction. It involves aligning various operational elements such as inventory management, production planning, quality control, and supply chain management to optimize performance and achieve excellence.
UNIPAKNILE x WCOM
UNIPAKNILE, a member of INDEVCO Group, is adopting the WCOM system for maintaining a continuous improvement strategy.
Starting with a pilot phase in June 2023 and taking on the first pillar of WCOM, the “Autonomous Management”, the “Martin 924”, one of the converting machines at UNIPAKNILE plant, underwent a deep clean. All hands on deck, the Vice President, the General Manager, the operators, foremen, and production assistants all worked together to ensure the machine was neatly cleaned and every inch of it scrubbed.
The effect of the “Autonomous Management” pillar is direct and major on the machine itself and on the people operating it. Undergoing deep cleaning such as the one in the pilot phase contributed to changing people’s attitude and enabling them to take care of their machine, but it also maintains optimal machinery conditions and improves Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
Achieving world-class operations management in the packaging industry requires a comprehensive understanding of the key principles and pillars as well as their practical application. The journey towards world-class operations management is an ongoing process that requires commitment, adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
The pilot phase at UNIPAKNILE has been successful. More equipment cleaning will be rolled out and the operation will carry on implementing strategies and processes to achieve excellence in all WCOM pillars throughout the year.
